Pugwash Farmers’ Market Zero Waste & Circular Economy Committee
In 2023 we began a journey toward a zero waste future at our market with the adoption of a Zero Waste & Circular Economy Movement Policy. This policy included a 4 year plan to become aware of the waste created by our market and to reduce or eliminate that waste.
Of all forms of waste, plastic waste is of particular concern. Although plastic has some incredible qualities, including low cost and convenience, it also has many distressing properties that we can no longer ignore. Microplastics, chemical additives, and the adverse health impacts from exposure to these things, are just a few examples of the negative side effects of plastic use.
Therefore, the following vendor items are no longer permitted to be distributed at the market:
- Plastic water bottles
- Plastic straws
- Plastic cutlery
- All styrofoam (polystyrene) items
Moving forward, it is the intent of the market to encourage vendors to reduce the use of Single-use Plastic, as much as possible, in the coming years. We encourage vendors to consider the 2026 season as a period to explore alternatives
to single-use plastic to help the market realize this goal.
Exemptions to the above restrictions may be made on a case by case basis by making a written request to the board of directors. Exemption requests should include an overview of the reasons why an exemption should be granted e.g. complying with food safety regulations.
Please note, the following are not acceptable reasons for an exemption:
- Cost of alternatives
- Inconvenience of alternatives
- Cosmetic appearance of alternatives
There will be challenges for us all as we rediscover how to live and thrive without relying on plastics in our lives. Vendors are encouraged to engage their entrepreneurial spirit and to experiment with creative and innovative methods for moving beyond plastic use in their businesses. We look forward to working with you all to take this critical step along our path to a healthy and responsible future together.
